Clothing: Dress Modestly, Frugally, and Well

Clothing- It's important to me to dress nicely, while staying both modest and frugal. I'll share tips, recommendations, and resources in this section, including information on how to create a simple, classic wardrobe with just a few basic pieces, and instructions for sewing a simple skirt without a pattern.

Create an Attractive, Coordinated Wardrobe on a Budget

Dressing well doesn't require a lot of clothes, just clothes that are well-chosen. Learn what colors and shapes are most attractive on you, and are practical for your lifestyle, then begin by selecting what I call a Foundation Wardrobe. This can be as small as two neutral bottom items (skirts, slacks); 4-5 coordinating t-shirts or blouses-- two neutral and 2-3 in your accent shade; and one shapely jacket in your neutral color or your favorite accent color. Add an accessory item such as a pretty scarf, necklace, or belt to pull them together, and you have all the outfits you need (assuming that you do laundry regularly!).

To begin, select one neutral as the foundation of your wardrobe, one neutral as a secondary foundation, and up to three colors as your accents. I started with black and red; and several years later, black is still my foundation, but I've added a few white and gray items and accents in purple, pink and turquoise in mostly solid colors (scarves provide pattern). Everything I own goes with at least two other colors, and any of my accents can be worn with any of my neutrals. It's a very helpful strategy!

Here are links to sites that have generally modest, wearable clothing (I can't guarantee that everything on these sites will meet your standards, but I hope you'll be able to find a few things you enjoy):

Sweet Innocence Dresses- This site offers very pretty dresses that are knee-length or longer and have

Coverwear- "Smart, stylish, and modest" is how Coverwear describes its clothing, which is mostly t-shirts. You can purchase online or host a Coverwear party (something like a Tupperware party, I gather). s

Great Lengths- This site specializes in knee-length or longer skirts and shorts.

Beautifully Modest- Getting ready for a wedding? Here are beautiful bridal gowns, most with sleeves and modest necklines. There are also attractive bridesmaid gowns, dresses for the mother of the bride, and a few day dresses and accessories. Prices are reasonable.

Sew Original- Would you like to have a gown custom-made? Sew Original creates bridal and formal wear, as well as costumes. The site has a detailed explanation of the custom creation process that will answer all your questions.

Modest Clothing- This site offers a small selection of knee-length and longer skirts as well as head coverings for women.
