ArticlesAnnouncement ArchivesHere's where you'll find some of the old announcements from the front page. I'd dump them, but there are some good links in them, and inevitably, someone will need them! 10.15.07 New language arts workshop posted! You can get it free during the week of October 15-22, 2007. I'm offering it as part of a benefit package for Lauren and Lynda Coats. You can read more about the Coats' challenging life situation, Lynda's wonderful new phonics program, All the Letters, All Year Long, and how you can get over $130 dollars of curriculum and bonus gifts when you order the phonics program-- all at LyndaCoats.com. 9.25.07 I've added new articles on home-school-friendly writing contests and more! See them HERE. 8.25.07 The catalog has been updated! You can see it by clicking the Catalog link . 7.11.07 I've posted a copy of the mid-summer newsletter on the Articles page. Here's a list of the topics: Summer Reading 07.6.06 There is still time to get ready for fall SAT essays! Registrations will be accepted at the door for the Beat-the-Clock Essay Workshop at the Dulles Expo Center in Northern Virginia on July 13! You can read more about it on the Beat-the-Clock page. The Northern Virginia Conference will offer several unusual exhibitors and events, including the Lukeion Project (offering live, online classes in Greece and Rome), the National Gallery of Art and many other Northern-Virginia-specific resources including co-ops, music, and sports instructors, plus a special 'Learn to Draw' workshop for students and parents by Barry Stebbing. In addition to the Beat-the-Clock workshop on Thursday, I will be speaking on "Evaluating Student Writing" on Friday, and on "Paying for College" on Saturday. Look for me in Booth 220! 06.15.06 I've added a family photo to the contact page, and another to my blog-- enjoy! I hope you'll join me for a Beat-the-Clock Essay Workshop in Northern Virginia on July 13. You can read more about it on the Beat the Clock page, or you can go directly to the Northern Virginia Home Education Conference site to register. I hope to see you there! 06.07.06 The HEAV Convention starts tomorrow! I'll be taking my latest book, Get a Jump Start on College!, as well as Transcripts Made Easy, Writing a Step Above: Grammar Made Easy, audio CD's and tapes, and a very few copies of Jackson Spielvogel's Western Civilization. It's been a busy month, with our son's wedding on May 20, but I'm looking forward to convention. Be sure to stop by booth 133 to say hello! 05.03.06 I have wanted to add a free GPA Calculator to my website for a long time, and it's finally up! Be sure to try it out by clicking here! Older announcements are archived on the "Announcements Archive" page (surprise!). Enjoy! Affiliate Marketing 04.13.06 There's a new newsletter available on the Articles page. I think you'll enjoy all the interesting links I collected this month! If you'd like to receive the newsletter in your inbox, just sign up in the subscription box at the top of the page. Remember, I won't flood your inbox with a lot of annoying messages, and I will never, ever share your e-mail address with anyone. Enjoy the newsletter! 04.05.06 I've been working on quite a few projects for the upcoming convention season, as well as personal projects for our son's college graduation and wedding in May. Because of all the extra excitement, I won't be available for many Beat-the-Clock workshops in May (for some reason, that seems to be everyone's favorite month to schedule them!). In order to avoid disappointment, you may want to schedule early or plan to come to the special Beat-the-Clock workshop I am offering in northern Virginia in July. I'm offering it on July 13 in conjunction with the Northern Virginia Home Education Conference, which will take place July 14-15 at the Dulles Expo and Conference Center. If you register for both events at once, you receive a $10 discount. You can download a PDF brochure by clicking here. 02.21.06 The phone line has been restored, and my computer repaired. I'm thankful that the lightning did no more damage than it did, and that we were home when it struck and could get the fire department there quickly. So while a few things are still waiting for repair/replacement, we are at least functional! The biggest thing I've done while waiting for all the repairs is to make Transcripts Made Easy available as an e-book. If you need it right now, you can have it! If you're not sure why e-books are great, click here to read how they work. You can also add an affiliate link to your website, and earn a 33% commission every time someone purchases a copy of the e-book through your referral! 02.09.06 FYI: Our phone box was struck by lightning on Saturday, so we do not have internet access until repairs are completed. I will check e-mail as often as possible, but please be patient if there is a delay in my response. My computer is supposed to be repaired in 3-5 days, so it shouldn't be long! Thanks for being patient. 02.01.06 The Mid-Winter Newsletter is posted on the Articles page! It's packed with useful information, including SAT/ACT deadlines, an e-book review, an invitation to Say What You Mean!, an online commnication convention, and much more. If you aren't already a subscriber, be sure to sign up now in the box on the left side of each page so that you won't miss any future issues! 1.26.06 I've been busy today, updating many links and resources, and adding some pages: Colleges That Welcome Non-Traditional Students, Traditional Business Opportunites, and Home Business Resources. The content on the new pages isn't totally complete, but at least it's a start! I also have a newsletter almost ready to go - it will go out next week, so if you haven't subscribed yet, be sure to do so. 1.16.06 Happy New Year! I've updated a few links, and am working on the mid-winter issue of the newsletter. I'll be posting that soon. In the meantime, you may enjoy some of the entries on my (relatively) new blog, The Everyday Educator. It's designed as a collection point for the random musings that don't quite fit on the website. So far, topics have included travel, the relative literacy of college graduates, telephone manners, and more. The unifying theme for the blog is "making time for things that matter," just as it is for the website. My goal is to brush away the persistent cobwebs of conventional wisdom and the strident demands on time and attention in order to focus on creating a home and a life focused on the people and things that really matter. 12.08.05 I've added an article to the Marketing page in the Home Business section, and a few new resource links to the Online Business page. Enjoy! 11.17-05 I've added a couple of announcements to the Articles page-- the deadline for the next SAT, and a special offer from my favorite homeschool magazine, The Old Schoolhouse Magazine. -9.22.05- More Aid Promised for Hurricane Victims! Alpha Omega Publications is offering over $1.2 million of their excellent Switched-On Schoolhouse curriculum software and 10 scholarships to the Alpha Omega Academy to families displaced by Hurricane Katrina and low-income homeschool families. I have used Switched-On Schoolhouse math for a couple of years with two of my boys, and was very pleased with it. The "everything's included" format is ideal for families who have lost personal libraries and must rely solely on the curriculum, and the software is very easy to set up and use. Families who are victims of Hurricane Katrina and churches that are interested in receiving AOP's curriculum should contact one of -9.08.05- Be sure to notice the spiffy new Google search box I've placed at the bottom of the page for your convenience! If you need to search, just type in your search string and your results will open in a new window. Enjoy! -9.02.05- I will be posting an end-of-summer newsletter soon, but I wanted to pass on news of two helpful resources for families displaced by Hurricane Katrina, and for those who would like to help. First, Ambleside Online, a site that offers totally free curriculum resources consistent with Charlotte Mason's educational vision, has posted an emergency lesson plan for displaced families. Just visit their homepage, www.amblesideonline.org, and click on the link to "Curriculum for Katrina Victims." Second, if you have new or gently used curriculum or school supplies you would like to share with those in need, Project Noah has been helping homeschoolers in crisis since 2001. Families in need may e-mail, call, or write to Project Noah to request books and supplies, and they will be provided as resources allow. -6.09.05- If you are interested in Doing College Your Way, there is a story in the Richmond Times Dispatch about a young man who has done just that. I'm particularly interested in this story, as I was privileged to be a consultant to the young man and his family a few years ago when it seemed that he was losing his way in school. His mother contacted me through the community college where I offered a workshop called "Get a Jump Start on College,' and booked a private consultation, and the rest is history. I don't always know who has acted on my suggestions, but I'm delighted at Jon's success, and happy to have had a small part in it. -5.26.05- The June newsletter is posted on the Articles page! There are some great new links, plus:
If you enjoy reading the newsletter, be sure to sign up on any page of the website in order to receive it in your e-mailbox. Enjoy the summer! -5.19.05- If you are planning to attend a homeschool convention, you may want to read my new article, "Making the Most of Convention," which is currently posted on the HEAV website. Conferences can be the highlight of the year, and there is doubtless one coming near you! As soon as I figure out how to add items to my order page, I will add audiotapes/CDs from my workshops. I hope they will prove to be another helpful resource for you.
